Historical Roots of Coaching
Coaching has its roots in classical Greece, particularly in the figure of Socrates (470-399 B.C.), who emphasized that happiness and good living come from the spiritual order and the inner harmony of the soul. Socrates believed that virtue is found in knowledge and that, by knowing what is right, one acts accordingly. His teaching method, based on dialogue, gave rise to “maieutics”, from the Greek word “maieutikos,” meaning “of midwifery.” It metaphorically describes the process of helping someone bring forth their own understanding or insights, much like a midwife assists in childbirth. In coaching translates into helping people to “give birth” to new ideas and answers through their own reflections.
“Virtue is found in knowledge and that, by knowing what is right, one acts accordingly.”

The Modern Evolution of Coaching
In the 1970s, coaching emerged in the United States thanks to Timothy Gallwey, a tennis coach. This approach expanded and was adopted by John Whitmore in England, who applied the principles of coaching to personal and organizational development. Thus, coaching has become a valuable tool for the integral growth of individuals and organizations.
The Meaning of “Coach”
The word “coach” comes from the Hungarian “kocs”, which referred to a horse-drawn carriage, used to transport people. This term has evolved to represent the process of accompanying and guiding people on their path to personal growth and transformation.
Differences between Coaching and Other Disciplines
Coaching should not be confused with therapy, consulting, mentoring, or tutoring. Coaching has developed its own methodology, relying on disciplines such as positive and humanistic psychology, psychoanalysis and Gestalt psychology, and among other disciplines. It focuses on accompaniment for personal development and the discovery of changes that transform internal and external behavior.
The Ontological Perspective in Coaching
Ontological coaching is based on the understanding of the crises that human beings face in their search for meaning and in the difficulty of relating to others. This practice considers that the human being is in constant change in three areas: language, emotionality and body. Language, in particular, has the power to change realities and build identities.
When to Find a Coach
It is recommended to seek a coach in moments of “breakdown”, when growth has stagnated or limiting patterns are faced. Coaching is useful in situations of conflict, helplessness or frustration, helping to create a clearer vision of reality and encouraging personal responsibility.
The Role of the Coach
The coach does not guide his clients towards correct solutions but accompanies them in exploring the consequences of their choices. Through a systemic approach, behavioral patterns and mental models that influence the individual’s life are identified, facilitating a process of reflection that can lead to significant changes.
Personal Transformation Through Coaching
Coaching is not a magic solution for happiness, but a process that facilitates personal transformation. Its goal is to help people become the best version of themselves, promoting greater well-being in their relationships. Through reflection and self-discovery, coachees acquire new skills that allow them to achieve their goals.
In summary Coaching is a process of change and transformation that is based on self-awareness and learning. As individuals move through this process, they experience a profound transformation that allows them to clarify what they need to change and what they need to keep, integrating their spirituality to achieve an integral transformation.
