Time for a Love Check-Up: How’s Your Heart Doing?”

By Anna Ram. Psychologist. Anna is a Certified Bilingual Facilitator for Prepare-Enrich Programs.

Just as we should prioritize our physical health with annual check-ups to ensure our bodies are functioning optimally, it’s equally important to take time for a “love check-up” in our relationships through our assessment.

A love check-up allows us to evaluate the emotional health of our connections with partners, family, and friends and helps to understand what type of couple we are.

Women by nature are often perceived to be more initiative-taking about their health and more likely to visit doctors for regular check-ups compared to men. This tendency can be attributed to several factors such as : health awareness, social support, communication, and cultural norms. Men are less likely to go to  regular doctors’ visits because factors like: Risk taking behavior, fear of diagnosis, lack of awareness, perception of health, busy lives, etc. But when it comes to a successful “ relationship check-up” in a couple,  is a ”matter of two.” It  requires collaboration and mutual effort from both partners to foster understanding, connection, and growth. This initiative-taking approach can help ensure that both partners are on the same page and that any issues are addressed before they escalate.

TYPES OF COUPLES: WOULD YOU LIKE TO FIND OUT WHAT TYPE OF COUPLE ARE YOU?

Based on Dr. David H. Olson’s research on about 4 million couples, Prepare-Enrich classifies couples by the following types:  VITALIZED, HARMONIOUS, CONVENTIONAL, CONFLICTED, and DEVITALIZED.
